CNG in Florida

At the beginning of 2011, there were only two public natural gas fueling stations in Florida: one in Ft. Lauderdale and one in Milton. This picture is rapidly changing as public stations are currently under development in Clearwater, Tampa, Rockledge, Sunrise, Jacksonville, and beyond.

Many commercial businesses and governmental agencies are already using clean, energy efficient natural gas vehicles to fuel their fleets. For example:

• Choice Environmental in Pompano Beach has 18 natural gas fueled trucks in its fleet
• Republic Services in Lakeland operates 50 refuse trucks in its natural gas fleet
• Veolia has a fleet of 32 natural gas fueled trucks
• The City of Clearwater is building a fueling station that will serve trucks in its Solid Waste Department, but will also be open to the public
• Tallahassee’s Leon County School District has eight new CNG fueled buses, has opened a state-of-the-art NGV refueling facility and has plans underway to build a second
• AT&T in Broward County has a fleet of 24 service vans fueled by natural gas
• Tampa International Airport’s (TIA) public fueling station was opened to the public in 2011. The airport also plans to convert its diesel-powered employee and economy parking lot shuttle service buses to natural gas— displacing approximately 275,000 gallons of diesel per year with cleaner, more efficient energy
• Energy Services of Pensacola is constructing a public access (fleets only at this time) CNG station for Emerald Coast Utility Authority (ECUA) with an operational date of August 15, 2012. ECUA is the refuse hauler for Escambia County Florida and they currently have 50 refuse trucks on order with a delivery date of Sept 1, 2012. They currently have two F-150 bi-fuel trucks with an additional 10 medium/heavy duty trucks on order. By 2015 they expect to have a total of 92 refuse trucks and 60 plus other vehicles.
